Farewell to Hikarigaoka girls

We farewelled the girls from Hikarigaoka Girls High School, Japan, at our assembly on Monday. The girls were each presented with a certificate and their Commemoration Day gift of “Is Emu off the Menu?” before performing a song and presenting a farewell speech to the assembly. In their final week, they also ran a cake stall to raise funds for Gahini Secondary School in Rwanda. Learning about the community service opportunities for our students has been an important part of the School culture that the girls have absorbed while here. With their host families, they baked cupcakes, ANZAC biscuits and other cookies, and their cake stall was well supported on Wednesday.

I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of Ms Eri Shinagawa, who has co-ordinated the program while the girls were here, and Mrs Bree Henderson, who supported them and provided English lessons for them. Their host families have been a great support and I thank them for opening their homes and hearts to the girls from our sister school. Our relationship with Hikarigaoka is more than 20 years old now and an important element in both our International and Languages programs. The girls have been fine ambassadors for their school and it has been a pleasure to have them with us.

Big Science Competition

The Big Science Competition is a multiple choice quiz, testing critical thinking and problem solving skills, not just factual recall. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable and interesting. The competition is aligned with the Australian Curriculum – Science, particularly in the areas of Science inquiry skills, Science as a human endeavour and Science understanding. It was wonderful, particularly in Science Week, to recognise the large number of students who gained such fine results in this competition in our assembly this week.

The following students are congratulated on their achievement of a High Distinction certificate.

Year 7: Anthony Smith
