BILLY ADAMS

It was with great sadness this week that we learned that Billy Adams (class of 2016 and 2017) passed away. Billy fought a very brave and incredibly courageous battle with cancer and he died peacefully on Monday with his family by his side. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Billy’s family - Tanya, Peter and Sam - and to his many friends from the Classes of 2016 and 2017 and from Blackwood House who have supported him throughout his battle. From Lakes Entrance, Billy attended the Bairnsdale and Garnsey campuses and he is remembered by all as a vivacious and charming young man with a great zest for life. We will remember him with great fondness and with admiration for his courage. Billy will be farewelled at a private funeral in Melbourne on Sunday.

EXAMINATIONS

Year 10 and 11 students have completed examinations this week and teachers have been finalising reports ready for the proofreading process. Reports will be give out on Friday June 21, which is the final day of Term 2. Semester 2 classes will commence on Tuesday June 11 after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This will mean new timetables for many Years 7-9 students and any senior students who have changed courses. New timetables will be distributed on Tuesday.

UNIFORM UPDATE

I am pleased to report that we are currently completing our Garnsey campus student focus groups regarding changes to the school uniform. The major changes on which we have sought feedback are the introduction of grey pants for girls, a new open-necked summer shirt for girls and boys, and shorts for girls. These are in addition to the current uniform and we believe these options will give students some choice. We will also be running student focus groups at the junior campuses and parent focus groups at each campus and will have a number of samples to display at each focus session. If you are interested in contributing to the uniform focus group, please advise Christine Callaghan by email at GippslandGrammar@gippslandgs.vic.edu.au.

The Garnsey focus groups are scheduled for:

Thursday July 18 at 5.15pm in the Lecture Theatre

Wednesday July 24 5.15pm in the Lecture Theatre

Focus groups will also be held at each junior campus and dates will be advised shortly.

SEISA NETWORKING DINNER 2019

Members of the School Executive, senior staff and Heads of Year enjoyed the annual SEISA networking dinner at the Warragul Convention Centre this week. Staff had an opportunity to network and socialise with colleagues from our other SEISA schools including Newhaven College, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School and Beaconhills Colleges Berwick and Pakenham. The guest speaker for the evening was Mr Hugh Williams, a Gippsland Grammar Old Scholar, who spoke about his CIS (Computers in Schools) project which we have trialled through the introduction of Digital Technologies in Year 7 this year. Hugh spoke about his passion for this project and shared some stories of his time in Silicon Valley; he also had a few stories to share about Bill Gates. We can all be very proud of Hugh’s achievements and it was great to hear him share them in this forum.

HOST FAMILIES

Due to some last-minute changes we are in desperate need of two extra host families for the Year 11 Hikarigaoka students, who are due to arrive in Sale on Monday July 22 and leave on August 19 (the students are away on camp from July 30-August 2).

Hosting one of these students is a great chance to learn more about Japanese language and culture in a home environment and I encourage all families to consider this opportunity. Though it would be ideal if you could host a student for the full four weeks they are here, but if not and if we can get a few families to host for a two week block, or even a single week, we’ll do our best to make that situation work.

If you do choose to take up this opportunity, all host families will need to complete child safety modules online, which will take about one hour. (This is a legal requirement due to the girls' visas.)

If any families would like more information on this, please contact our Garnsey Japanese teacher Bree Henderson at bree.henderson@gippslandgs.vic.edu.au or by calling Garnsey on 5143 6388.
