Head of Bairnsdale Campus

A very warm welcome to all who make up our community as we commence the new school year. You have all been treated with a gentle transition back to school with a short two day week. The staff travelled together to Garnsey Campus on Tuesday to celebrate the commencement of 2018 as a whole school. A moving Eucharist service was followed by a professional development day furthering our understanding of Solo Taxonomy, effective feedback, Cultures of Thinking and Thinking Routines. On Wednesday, Bairnsdale campus staff gathered, welcoming new and returning teachers in a day that was both meaningful and productive.

Of course, all of this is in preparation for our students to ensure they commence their school year positively and have a successful year ahead. Our students arrived on Thursday with a lovely mix of good cheer and nervousness. Very quickly they all settled beautifully allowing the parents to enjoy our Welcome Morning Tea.

We will gather for another enjoyable community event this evening for our Family Picnic. I look forward to sharing in this event with our ELC and School families, celebrating the start of the new school year, getting to know our new families and hearing about your holiday highlights.  Please join us at school, with your picnic at 5.30pm.

The calendar is filling quickly with many important dates to be considered. Please consult the school portal calendar so that you can mark the dates relevant to your children in your diary. If you have trouble accessing the portal, please don’t hesitate to contact the IT Helpdesk on 51436364.  You will find a summary of the week to come in the ‘Diary Dates’ section of this newsletter.

While you are adding dates to your diaries, could you please add STAGGFAIR on Sunday 18 March? This biennial event is held at our Garnsey Campus in Sale and the Bairnsdale Campus community is very much a part of the planning and fun of the day.  This year’s event will begin with a ‘Dye Hard Fun Run’ and I look forward to joining in with the fun of this event (I will be walking!) with students and their parents.

Next week we will be focussed on swimming with Trials for students in Years 3-6 to be held on Thursday and our House Swimming Carnival for all students from Prep to Year 6 on Friday.  Both of these events will be held at the Bairnsdale Outdoor Pool and parents are very welcome to come along, either as spectators and supporters, or to assist with running the events.  We are also planning our second annual relay race between the Year 6 students, parents and staff.  If you would like to participate in this event, please bring your bathers on the day and let Elisha Froud know.

As you may be aware, the BARC pool is currently being renovated. We would normally hold swimming lessons for Year 5 and 6 students during Term 1; however, these are likely to be delayed until Term 2 for this year.

There has been a change in both the time and the day for our Bairnsdale Singers and Recorder Consort this year to allow for increased participation. Singers will meet on Tuesdays, and Recorder Consort on Thursdays, from 2.45-3.30pm.  We have tried to accommodate for the many after school activities and our bus travellers who would still like to be involved in these groups. A letter will be sent to all Year 3 to 6 students next week with further information about how to become involved in these opportunities.

Yesterday all families will have received a copy of the new Tuckshop menu.  We are so fortunate to have Tony to prepare fresh, homemade food for our students.  The menu this term caters for all dietary requirements.  Our entire menu is nut free, and there are multiple options suitable for vegetarians, gluten free diets and those with egg allergies.  For further information about the menu, please see the copy posted to the portal page, or check with Tony.  Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist in the Tuckshop on Fridays this year.  You may choose the help once a term or on a more regular basis; all offers of help are very much appreciated.

With the New Year and new classes, we are aware that families will have many questions about curriculum, processes and procedures.  With this in mind, we have a Parent Information Evening planned from 5.00pm on Thursday 22 February.  A note with the details of this event has been sent home to families this week, and is available on the Bairnsdale Portal page.

I am very happy to let you know that Layla in Year 1 and Louie in ELC Pre-Prep have had a new baby brother, Liev, during the holidays.  We send our best wishes to their family on this very happy occasion.  The holidays have also brought some sad news and some challenging times for others in our school community and we hold these families in our thoughts and prayers.

It is hard to believe how quickly my second year has transpired. It is with sincerity that I truly look forward to another positive year, being part of this unique community.

With warm wishes for the weekend.
