Deputy Principal - Head of Garnsey Campus

Welcome back to a new term and the final countdown to the School year. It’s a busy time and I have no doubt the term will fly by as we farewell Year 12 students and then finalise courses before welcoming Year 6s for their transition program in only 8 weeks. I look forward to all that will be learned and achieved in Term 4.

Year 12 Practice Examinations

Year 12 students completed practice examinations in all VCE and VET subjects in the last week of the holidays. These were an important trial run for the examinations that commence in a few weeks. Students have also commenced final oral and performance assessments in Languages, Theatre Studies and Music Performance. We wish them well as they complete these final assessments; I’m sure that their hard work will pay off.

Annual Debating Dinner

Held at the Criterion Hotel Macalister Room on Thursday night, the annual Debating Dinner was an opportunity for the 60 students who have participated in debating this year to celebrate their achievements. There was a wonderfully supportive atmosphere at the dinner, which was attended by both students and parents. Ms Penelope Monger, teacher in charge of debating, thanked students for their commitment and achievements. There were some great successes in debating this year, with some students participating in the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) competition and others in the SEISA competition, as well as several public speaking competitions. Gippsland Grammar students were awarded 20 Best Speaker awards in the DAV competition. Individual awards were presented at the dinner to:

D Grade Best Debater 2017: Jesse Blackwood

C Grade Best Debater 2017: Melody Jefferis

B Grade Best Debater 2017: Pierce Kidson-Purry

A Grade Best Debater 2017: Annabelle Lamb

Best Public Speaker 2017: Becky Strauss

I thank Ms Monger for her excellent leadership of this activity and for outstanding results in debating in 2017.

Student Achievements

Alice Murray (Year 7) won the 2017 Australian Secondary Schools 1.05m Show Jumping title at the National Interschool Championships in Toowoomba, Queensland, during the holidays. Alice was also a member of the Victorian secondary school show jump team, along with Year 11 student Darcy Wade, and they were runners-up overall.  Darcy came sixth individually and won the Rising Star Award; he was also captain of the Victorian showjumping team. Congratulations to these riders and their families for the huge effort and dedication required to compete at this level.
