This department cover Years 7-12 and currently encompasses:
VCE General Mathematics
VCE Further Mathematics
VCE Mathematical Methods
VCE Specialist Mathematics
In the Mathematics Faculty, a shared language of learning is used to discuss the students’ learning and higher order thinking skills are promoted through teaching practices which develop deeper student understanding of mathematical concepts. The teaching of mathematics is enhanced through problem-solving contexts and enquiry-oriented environments. The Australian Mathematics Competition is available for all Year 7 – 12 students to extend themselves.
Online software like ‘Hot Maths’ and the lunchtime and after school Mathematics tutorial program are provided to further support all students in their learning.
In Years 7 and 8, students take courses designed to cater for all abilities with interested students being extended with the Mathematics Olympiad and Australian Mathematics Challenge.
Year 9 and 10 Mathematics continues to be taught in mixed ability groupings with individual needs met by through differentiation by their teachers. By mid-year of Year 10, students may be grouped according to algebraic knowledge and skills to support a student’s future mathematical abilities, needs and interests. Year 9 and 10 students are also provided with extra extension through the Australian Mathematics Challenge. The Australian curriculum informs the mathematics program to Year 10.
Technology is extensively utilised from Years 10-12 as students use the TI CAS graphing calculator to extend their problem solving abilities.
At VCE level, the various courses offered are designed to enable students to develop their mathematical skills and knowledge, to apply these skills to analyse, investigate, model and solve problems and to use technology to effectively support their learning.
